Break It To Me Gently

Break it to me gently, break it to me slow,
Why am I the last one, the last one to know?

Everybody's talking 'bout a guy that you once knew,
They say he's back in town again, they say he asks for you.

You think we're going nowhere, 'cause there's nowhere left to go,
But surely things aren't that bad, the biggest oaks don't grow.

They shed their leaves in autumn, waiting for the time,
When the winter snow has gone away and they feel the warm sunshine.

I'm looking out the window into the winter night,
The snow is falling softly, the streetlighs shining bright.

It's 10.15 and you're not home, you didn't say you'd be late,
I pour myself a strong drink then I watch TV and wait.

At last I hear your house key, turning in the lock,
Honey I've been worried I say looking at the clock.

You shrug out of your fur coat, shake the snowflakes from your hair.
Then kick off your wet shoes while I just stand and stare.

You said Honey I'm so sorry, I should have let you know,
I was shopping for the holiday, got caught up in the snow.

There's a tree on top the SUV, I'm feeling really tired,
Could you please put on your boots and carry it inside?

You sat down by the fireside, tears were in your eyes,
I didn't mean to hurt you, you said to my surprise,

I promise I won't leave you, I'll always be right here.
It's just that time of month again, it's just that time of year.

Break it to me gently, break it to me slow,
Why am I the last one, the last one to know?
