Do You Know My Name

I join you by the fireside, you're looking just the same,
But when I say good morning, ma, you don't even know my name.

You gaze into the flickering flames, but your tired eyes don't see,
You're living in a different world, far away from me.

I remember when you took my hand and led me to the school,
Dragging me across the park, I was stubborn as a mule.

College and a PhD meant an awful lot to you,
More than they meant to me, but I'm glad we saw it through.

When I was in trouble you brushed away my tears,
Held me in my arms and drove away my fears.

My friends and my family, you treated as your own,
Whatever happens to you now, you'll never be alone.

Once a man and twice a child is what the bible says,
It's my turn to take your hand and help you through the days.

Every time I see your face I'm looking for a clue,
A smile, a frown, a whisper that shows that you're still you.

Everything I have in life you gave it endlessly,
I'd be the happiest man if you came back to me.
