Phoenix

You were the sunshine and you were the rain,
You were the ecstasy and you were the pain,
Always there beside me, a lover and a friend,
Sharing laughter, sharing thoughts until it had to end.

We had a silly quarrel, it was all my fault not yours,
Words were said that crossed the line and closed all the doors.
Pride comes before a fall, and I fell hard and fast,
When you walked away and vanished in my past.

It's not like we were married, it's not like we had kids,
But after 10 years of loving you, to end up on the skids,
Is a painful experience and I hate to be alone.
And I know I have to find you and try to bring you home.

I call your mother on the phone, she says you've gone away,
To a friend in Arizona, that's where you're going to stay.
I can't afford the airfare and I don't like the train,
To drive that far would be totally insane.

I push my old car faster and I know I can't look back,
Cruising down the highway beside the railroad track,
Driving over mountains, driving over the plain,
Driving through a snowstorm, driving through the rain.

The windscreen wipers slapping, the tyres hum on the road,
I have to keep on driving, though my head wants to explode.
I stop for gas and coffee at a place on Route 17,
I'm running on high octane and caffeine.

I find the place you're staying and I knock upon the door.
You ask me "hey what kept you, are you still feeling sore?"
I held you in my arms again, I felt like I would cry,
As our love rose from the ashes and the flames soared in the sky.

You are the sunshine and you are the rain,
You are the ecstasy and you are the pain,
Always there beside me, a lover and a friend,
Sharing laughter, sharing thoughts, until the end.
